What
is Free Methodist?
We are part of a larger church family called “The
Free Methodist Church . We have hundreds of thousands of members
across the world.
You
probably have heard of the (United) Methodist church. We are a
smaller, different denomination. We separated from them in 1860
over the following issues:
- We wanted freedom for slaves.
- We wanted freedom in worship
- We wanted free pews .
(There was a tradition at the time where people could rent pews
. Thus the rich would get all the best seats and the poor were
not welcome.)
- We felt like the Methodist church
at the time was moving away from the message of the bible.
Today the United Methodist Church has churches covering
the spectrum
of belief. Some are very liberal. Some are conservative. The Free
Methodist Church is unified in its belief that the Bible is the authoritative
word of the living God. They are all conservative in doctrine.
In this part of Pennsylvania, the Free
Methodist Church has churches in downtown Allentown, Philadelphia,
and Harrisburg.
